Napa Valley is one of our favorite getaways – we love playing tourist there! We’re lucky to live in the San Francisco Bay Area, so it’s only a short drive from the hustle and bustle of the city (about one hour north of SF) to the scenic wine country – it makes a great day trip, romantic weekend or vacation. If you’re visiting San Francisco from out-of-town, Napa Valley is a “must-see” destination.
Napa Valley Wine Country is beautiful year-round. However, the most interesting time to visit the area is during the Harvest Season, or “Crush” (when the grapes are picked) – late Summer into Fall (August-October). Note: The Harvest Season can vary due to climate. This year’s fairly cool summer in Napa means that the harvest will be later than usual, most likely not starting until after Labor Day (September 6 — for our international readers).
There’s so much to do and see in Napa Valley – fun wineries and wine-tasting tours, fabulous gourmet restaurants, luxurious spas,hot-air ballooning, shopping… and more! We get calls from around the world asking for our recommendations – so we’ve put together some ideas, including our favorite and most popular restaurants, wineries and attractions. Napa Valley Wine Country is one of Northern California’s Top Culinary Destinations – and Yountville (a fun foodie haven and one of our favorite places to stay in Napa Valley), has become known as the “Culinary Capital of the Valley.” Yet another good reason to spend a few days eating your way thru‘ Napa Valley – and that’s just what we did this summer to celebrate a special birthday with family who were visiting from New York.
We also packed in plenty of wine-tasting! Enjoy a leisurely drive along scenic Hwy 29 and visit smaller boutique wineries dotted along the route. Follow the road from Yountville to Oakville, Rutherford, St. Helena, Calistoga… and beyond. Be prepared for traffic, especially on weekends and during peak season. Fun wineries and luxurious resorts can also be found along the Silverado Trail that runs parallel to Hwy 29.
Tell us about your favorite Napa Valley Restaurants, Wineries and Favorite Things To Do – we’d love to hear from you 🙂
