Landmark built by Frank Lloyd Wright

The Guggenheim Museum, a National Historic Landmark, opened in 1959. Designed and built by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the museum is striking both inside and out.

Upper East Side of Manhattan next to Central Park

The museum is nestled next to Central Park. It’s located at 1071 Fifth Avenue, between 88th and 89th Streets on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

Domed Skylight and Circular Ramps

Its unique interior features a continuous spiral walkway ramp leading up to a stunning domed skylight that lights up the whole museum.

You can either walk up the circular ramp from the main rotunda or take an elevator to the top and walk down. We walked to the top and slowly made our way down, admiring the art in the alcoves along the way.

Combine Art & Exercise

During our visit, temperatures outside were sweltering with high humidity. And so it felt wonderful to be in an air-conditioned museum, enjoying the art and getting our exercise indoors!

Modern & Contemporary Art

The museum features Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, modern and contemporary works of art. It houses a permanent collection, as well as current and changing art exhibitions from the 19th and 20th century. See masterpieces from the Guggenheim Collection including works by Picasso, Chagall, Cezanne, Degas, Gauguin, Seurat, Turner, and Van Gogh. Self-guided audio tours and free guided tours are available.

Cafe at Guggenheim Museum

Enjoy an afternoon coffee and a pastry or a glass of wine at the museum’s cafe, located on the third floor. The cafe’s floor-to-ceiling windows overlook Central Park.

Guggenheim Museum Stores

Be sure to visit the Museum Stores (there are two of them) if you want to pick up a Guggenheim souvenir or gift. They offer a full range of apparel and accessories, books, posters, jewelry, and toys. They were sold out of their black “Guggenheim New York” t-shirts during our visit, but we managed to order one online when we got home.
