Taking the Stress Out of Business Travel

Many people wrongly assume that traveling with business is nothing more than a ‘jolly’ consisting of eating out with clients, sight-seeing and staying in luxury hotels – with all expenses whacked on the company credit card.

Sounds great doesn’t it? Well, if only it was true…

In actual fact, the business traveller is at a higher risk of getting stressed, according to experts, as they tend to work non-stop on a plane or train, miss out on valuable sleep and eat fast-foods which do little for the body’s health and the mind’s well-being.

Added to this, as many companies are now swapping business class for economy class, country-hopping is no longer the luxurious pursuit that it once was, making regular travel a tiresome chore rather than a well-earned perk. Given that the business trip often includes giving presentations and meeting important clients, it’s no wonder that travellers arrive home a nervous wreck.

So, the question is, are there any ways to make business travel strain-free? Here are a few ideas:

  • Have the right mind-set
    If you embark filled with negativity then your trip doesn’t stand a chance of being enjoyable. See it as an exciting adventure and an opportunity, rather than a bind, and try to make the most of any setbacks, such as booking yourself in for a massage if your flight is delayed.
  • Exercise whenever you can
    Exercising releases endorphins that help to reduce stress levels so a swim before breakfast or a quick run before your evening meal will stand you in good stead.
  • Eat healthily and drink lots (of water!)
    Eating foods that are high in omega 3 and B6 / B, such as tuna or a banana helps to alleviate stress; however eating fatty, greasy foods can make you feel more anxious. The body can dehydrate very quickly when travelling so it is important to take on lots of fluids, avoiding alcohol and caffeine on the plane.
  • Counter the effects of jet lag
    Jet lag is the result of a lack of serotonin, which regulates sleep patterns, appetite and your mood – taking 5-HTP supplements can counteract this depletion.
  • Dress with comfort in mind
    There’s no need to pack multiple outfits for every eventuality – just keep it simple. Particularly when travelling, assuming you’re not meeting a client straight from the airport, stick to your comfiest shoes and trousers.
  • Formulate an itinerary to accommodate leisure time
    This may be easier said than done, however instead of rushing from airport to meeting, meeting back to airport, why not factor in a free afternoon to take in the sights, relax by the pool or simply grab some much-needed sleep?

Travelling with business need not be stressful –  it should be an enjoyable experience where you get to see new places, meet people of different nationalities and cultures and learn new languages and customs.
