What a difference a year makes! Last year’s World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in Half Moon Bay, CA took place on a beautiful warm, sunny day. Today, it was heavy mist, fog, cold and wet. But that didn’t dampen the spirits of the crowds – they turned out in droves. In fact, this year’s event seemed like the largest one ever!
And it was certainly one of the most exciting – Half Moon Bay weighed in two of their BIGGEST pumpkins and set two NEW California State records (for the winning pumpkin, pictured above, and the runner-up)!
This year’s pumpkins at Half Moon Bay’s annual Championship Weigh-Off competition were the biggest ever – over 13 pumpkins weighed in at over 1,000 pounds!
The 2010 Half Moon Bay World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off winner is Ron Root of Citrus Heights, California. His winning Giant Pumpkin (pictured top) tipped the scales at an impressive 1,535 pounds (but 123 pounds short of last year’s record-setting 1,658-pounder from Iowa) – tying California’s record of 1,535 pounds.
Half Moon Bay’s annual World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off is coming up next month. It’s a fun event! The pumpkins get bigger every year -and so do the crowds. When we first started coming to the Pumpkin Weigh-Off years ago, it had more of a small-town feeling. Now it’s grown into quite an event, drawing hundreds of people, including the press, and featuring live entertainment.
The Pumpkin Weigh-Off is held every October at the I.D.E.S. Grounds on Main Street in downtown Half Moon Bay, usually the week before the annual world-famous Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival (which takes place prior to Halloween). This year, the World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off will be held on Monday, October 11, 2010(Columbus Day – a federal holiday) from 7am-11am.
Thad Starr of Pleasant Hill, Oregon took Top Prize at last year’s Half Moon Bay World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off. His winning pumpkin tipped the scales at an impressive 1,524 pounds — breaking the 2006 record by over 300 pounds!
This year’s event takes place on Monday, October 13th from 7:30-10:30am. Fun for kids… and big kids too!
