Notre Dame Cathedral - Paris

Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris
Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris

Notre Dame Cathedral is one of the most popular attractions in Paris. The majestic cathedral is set on the banks of the River Seine. Notre Dame’s grand architecture is even more beautiful outside, especially on a sunny day and during sunset.

Devastating Fire in 2019

In April 2019, the cathedral encountered a devastating fire. Its roof and spire were badly damaged. Miraculously, the cathedral’s grand organ (pictured below) escaped serious damage and is being repaired. Thankfully, most of the cathedral’s structure, including its beautiful Gothic art stained-glass windows and many of its priceless artifacts was spared. The 12th century cathedral is undergoing renovations and it is expected to be restored to its original glory. Following the massive fire, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that Notre Dame would be rebuilt by 2024.

Closed Until Further Notice

Due to the fire, Notre Dame Cathedral is closed to the public until reconstruction work is completed. Visitors can take pictures of the cathedral from the bridges of the Seine. Or you can walk through the garden, behind the cathedral and cross over the bridge to Ile St. Louis, the smallest island on the River Seine.
