NEW Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco

Home » Blog » NEW Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco

The NEW Walt Disney Family Museum officially opens to the public on Thursday, October 1, 2009. It’s a “must-see” for Disney fans. We enjoyed reliving childhood memories of our favorite Disney characters and classic movies. We spent several hours at the museum and only just scratched the surface. You may want to consider becoming a member so that you can visit the museum throughout the year.

Located at the Historic Presidio in San Francisco

The state-of-the-art facility, located at the historic Presidio in San Francisco, tells the story of the life and work of Walt Disney.  Why the Presidio in San Francisco vs any other city in the world? Apparently Walt Disney was a huge fan of the military and General Pershing (who commanded the Presidio) in particular. And, the museum building recalls “Main Street U.S.A. in Disney World.”

Snow White and Seven Miniature Oscars

The stories of Disney’s life, creativity, family and the processes and innovations he brought to his art are told through a series of 10 permanent galleries, arranged in chronological order. The spacious entry hall features 248 awards in glass cabinets. Our favorite is the special “Snow White” Academy Award, which includes a full-size Oscar and seven miniature “Oscars” presented to Walt by Shirley Temple.

Early Drawings of Mickey Mouse

Early drawings of Mickey Mouse and Disney’s most popular characters, personal letters, Disney family home movies, artifacts and groundbreaking technologies are showcased at The Walt Disney Family Museum. See exhibits featuring Walt Disney’s vision for Disneyland and EPCOT. Throughout the exhibits, see rare film clips, concept art, scripts, musical scores, and cameras that Disney and his staff used in creating his characters and films.

Magnificent SF Views

And wait until you see the magnificent view of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Bay from the museum’s floor-to-ceiling windows – it’s absolutely breathtaking!

Audio Guides are available in Spanish, Japanese and Mandarin. Ask for them at the Information Desk.

Admission to the Museum is by Timed-Entry Ticket only. Note: Timed-Entry Tickets are available online up to 60 days in advance. Timed-Entry Tickets may not be available at the door.

Have FUN – say hi to Mickey 🙂
