Fun New York Wineries – Niagara Wine Trail (Napa Valley of the East)

During a recent visit to Buffalo, we enjoyed a fun day of wine-tasting at award-winning New York wineries dotted along the Niagara Wine Trail. Many people may not be aware of this particular East Coast wine region. There’s more to Buffalo and its surrounding areas than chicken wings and Niagara Falls!

The Niagara Wine Trail is touted as the newest and one of the fastest-growing wine trails in New York state. It’s on its way to becoming the “Napa Valley of the East.” The area reminded us of how Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley used to be years ago, in the early 70s. That was before they both became crowded and expensive world-class wine and tourist destinations. What better time than now to visit the Niagara Wine Trail.

The Niagara Wine Trail is conveniently located just half an hour from Buffalo, New York. And it’s just minutes from Niagara Falls, and approximately 1 1/2 hours from Rochester, NY or Toronto, Canada. The trail is composed of two routes: The Niagara Wine Trail and the Niagara Escarpment Wine Trail. Whatever route you follow, have fun wine-tasting and touring the wineries.

The area is also famous for Niagara Icewine, a sweet after-dinner wine. Over 90% of Canada’s Icewine is produced by Niagara vintners. It’s a little too sweet for our taste. We prefer dry red and white wines. However, it is popular with locals and tourists alike. Be sure to have a taste and judge for yourself. Cheers!
